Coconuts: all they're cracked up to be?



A new study showing that coconut oil prevents tooth decay has added to the recent enthusiasm for all things coconut.

Last year, supermodel Miranda Kerr piqued public interest in virgin coconut oil when she revealed that she will not go a day without it.

"I personally take four teaspoons per day, either on my salads, in my cooking or in my cups of green tea" she said.

But, as much as many have flocked to health-food shops with the hope of tapping into Kerr’s secret weapon, do new health claims about the once-maligned coconut oil and its trendy sibling, coconut water, stand up to scrutiny?

The Many Benefits of Coconut

Researchers at the Athlone Institute of Technology in Ireland say coconut oil treated with enzymes attacks Streptococcus bacteria – a major cause of tooth decay.

"Incorporating enzyme-modified coconut oil into dental hygiene products would be an attractive alternative to chemical additives," Dr Damien Brady last week told the Society for General Microbiology conference at the University of Warwick in Coventry, England.

The study also found that enzyme-modified coconut oil was active against the yeast Candida albicans, which can cause thrush and other health problems.

After decades of warnings about its alleged artery-clogging properties, recent studies suggest that coconut oil may in fact be heart friendly and could have many other health benefits.

"For more than 60 years, health officials and the media have warned that saturated fats are bad for your health and lead to a host of negative consequences, including high cholesterol, obesity, heart disease and Alzheimer’s disease," says best-selling author and Huffington Post blogger, Dr Joseph Mercola.

"It may surprise you to learn that the naturally occurring saturated fat in coconut oil is actually good for you and provides a number of profound health benefits, including improving heart health, supporting your immune system, boosting your thyroid and improving your skin.

"Nearly 50 percent of the fat in coconut oil is of a type rarely found in nature called lauric acid, a ‘miracle’ compound that your body converts into monolaurin, which has anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties," says Dr Mercola.


Thomas Brenna, a professor of nutritional sciences at Cornell University, agrees. He told The New York Times: "Most of the [earlier] studies involving coconut oil were done with partially hydrogenated coconut oil, which researchers used because they needed to raise the cholesterol levels of their rabbits in order to obtain certain data".

Partial hydrogenation creates harmful trans fats and destroys many essential fatty acids and antioxidants present in virgin coconut oil, says Dr Brenna.

"Virgin coconut oil, which has not been chemically treated, is a different thing in terms of health perspective," says Dr Brenna.

A recent study by Sydney’s Garvan Institute of Medical Research (GIMR) found that a diet rich in coconut oil reduces the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes by protecting against “insulin resistance” and avoiding the buildup of body fat.


"These findings are important because obesity and insulin resistance are major factors leading to the development of Type 2 diabetes," say GIMR researchers Dr Nigel Turner and Associate Professor Jiming Ye.

"Coconut oil has dragged itself out of the muck of vast misrepresentation over the past few years but still rarely gets the appreciation it truly deserves," according to Sayer Ji, founder of US natural medicine database GreenMedInfo.com.

"Coconut oil has anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, analgesic and fever-reducing properties, is an exceptional healing agent and is fat-burning," says Ji.

While coconut oil and coconut milk are extracted from the kernel or meat of mature coconuts harvested from the coconut palm, coconut water is the liquid found inside young green coconuts.

The coconut water craze - backed by celebrity investors including Madonna, Demi Moore and Matthew McConaughey - has snowballed in the US and Europe with sales doubling to $US265 million last year and expected to double again this year.

"There are few beverages on this planet as bio-compatible to the human body and its hydration needs as coconut water,” says Ji, who notes that coconut water has even been used for intravenous hydration of critically ill patients in remote areas.

"While some are concerned about the sugar content of this slightly sweet beverage, recent research shows that it actually exhibits blood sugar lowering properties," Ji says.

Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics spokesperson and dietician Andrea Giancoli explains: "The big deal about coconut water is that it packs a potassium punch, and potassium is important for heart health, regulating blood pressure and other body systems".

But coconut water is not "magical," Giancoli told National Public Radio, "and there’s plenty of potassium in a healthy diet."

New industry body Coconut Water Australia says coconut water is "the purest liquid second only to water itself…choc-full of electrolytes, calcium, potassium, magnesium: everything that is good for you for only around 60 calories per serve."

However, consumer rights group Choice remains unconvinced by what it describes as "the latest health fad." "While the marketing on the packages claims coconut water is a nutritional goldmine," Choice found that dietary consultants believed very differently: "…the only real goldmine is for those selling the product."

Dietician Tania Ferraretto told the watchdog that coconut water has been promoted as a source of minerals such as calcium, magnesium and phosphorous, "but it only contains small amounts of these and other nutrients."        
                                                       
Instead, Ferraretto recommends plain water: "It’s the best drink to hydrate the body and it’s free, unlike coconut water, which can cost up to $4 a bottle."

Arthritis Remedies

Arthritis is a debilitating disease that causes pain and loss of movement of the joints. The word arthritis literally means joint inflammation - arth=joint, ritis=inflammation.

Looking for an effective Arthritis Remedy
Since arthritis comes in so many different forms and since no two people are alike, what works for one person or one kind of arthritis may not work for another. Following are remedies, treatments and information which have may have been effective with at least some people and some forms of arthritis.
  •  Plant Minerals - minerals are the building blocks of the enzymes necessary for the utilization of all other vitamins and nutrients. Minerals already digested by plants are potentially 100% absorbable and therefore readily useable by the body.
  •  Other  Supplements - MSM, Glucosamine, Chondrotin, Collagen, Calcium with Ostivone (these nutrients are usually available together as a supplement)

  •  Juices for arthritis:

    * Black cherry juice has been used for arthritis. Take two glasses of this juice twice a day (each glass contains four ounces of juice diluted with four ounces of water). You can discontinue this treatment once the pain clears up.
    * People with rheumatoid arthritis should include in their daily diets juices high in the anti-inflammatory nutrients. These nutrients include beta-carotene (found in parsley, broccoli and spinach) and copper (found in carrots, apples and ginger).
    * Rheumatoid arthritis improves with a glass or two a day of pineapple juice. Pineapple is a rich source of the enzyme bromelain, which has strong anti-inflammatory properties.


    Try a glass (3 x day) of green juice, such as Wheatgrass, Kale, or a mixture of green leafy vegetables such as Spinach, or Silverbeet, mixed with carrot, celery, and red beetroot as a great blood cleanser and good tonic for arthritis.

  • Other Useful Juices:
    * Carrot, celery, and cabbage juice. Add a little parsley.
    * Potato juice (If you are not allergic to this.)
    * Lemon juice - Take juice of half a lemon before every meal and before going to bed.
    * Carrot, beet, and cucumber.
    * During acute stage, one pint to one quart celery juice daily.
    * Radish, garlic and parsley!

    Caution
    : Certain juices may cause adverse reactions in people with osteoarthritis. Avoid citrus fruits, and be careful with vegetables from the nightshade family, including potatoes, tomatoes, peppers and eggplant. Citrus seems to promote swelling, and nightshades contain psyllium alkaloids, which cause problems for some people.

The Hot and Cold of HOT Flushes!

What are Hot Flushes?


Hot flushes, are a vasomotor symptom of menopause. This means that hot flushes can disrupt the usual functioning of the vascular and motor systems of the body, causing intense heat, perspiration, and other symptoms ranging from mild to severe. 

Women with menopause-related hot flushes will usually experience a consistent and unique pattern of symptoms. The duration and frequency of hot flushes varies from woman to woman, but they can occur at any time of the day or night. They are often called night sweats when they happen during sleep.

 Some women experience mild symptoms of hot flushes infrequently, while others have more severe symptoms more than once daily.


 Signs and Symptoms of Hot Flushes

 

The following are the most common signs and symptoms of hot flashes:

  • Sudden, intense feelings of heat in the face, neck, arms, torso, and sometimes the whole body.
  • Rapid or irregular heartbeat and pulse, including heart palpitations.
  • Flushing, or reddened face and neck, particularly in lighter skinned women.
  • Perspiration ranging from mild to profuse.
  • Cold chills often follow hot flushes, though sometimes women only experience the chill.
  • Sleep disturbances are characteristic of hot flushes that occur at night, also known as night sweats. Estrogen levels are often lowest at night, which is why women often experience nocturnal hot flushes.
  • Other Symptoms can include: Nausea, Dizziness, Anxiety and Headaches.



Some women who experience hot flushes during menopause have experimented with the foods they crave and eat and have found several ways to manage hot flushes in order to reduce their frequency and/or severity by adjusting their diet. In many cases, simple steps can be taken throughout the day to prevent or allay hot flushes, like having cool showers or resting with the fan turned on. Once recognised, avoiding the common triggers of hot flushes is an important way to combat the hot flushes. 


Reducing hot flushes through diet:

The theory of Chinese medicine requires that you consume cold, or cooling foods when you are hot, and hot, or warming foods when you are cold. The definition of "hot" and "cold" foods does not refer merely to the food temperature, but to its energetic properties. It's beneficial to notice the type of foods you eat and whether they are cooked or raw; what color they are; and whether it is spicy or bland and what effects you experience after eating these foods.

Moods and Foods

A  diet rich in wholefoods benefits not only our body physically but mentally and emotionally as well...
Recent studies have shown that what we eat influences our moods and psychological behaviours — a link that represents an exciting new frontier for personal health and happiness. Choosing to eat foods that are fresh, with a high nutrient value of vitamins and minerals can be a recipe for success!

Nutritional factors can have a significant impact on brain function, which can result, if deficiencies or imbalances occur, in numerous mental aberrations, such as depression, anxiety, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, schizophrenia, autism, bulimia, anorexia and bi-polar disorder.

Alkaline diets are a popular choice for people who want to achieve optimum good health. However, many people don't actually understand this diet or how it works. The concept is actually fairly simple - the diet focuses on regaining the correct acid/alkaline pH balance in the body, that was compromised when we started to eat a more domesticated and processed diet. Rather than focusing on foods that are high in sugar, fat, and cholesterol, an alkaline diet primarily consists of fresh fruits and vegetables, healthy whole grains, wholesome protein sources such as soy, beans and legumes, and healthy oils such as canola, olive and flax seed. These foods may be either alkaline or acid in their natural state, but they all produce what is termed as an "alkaline ash" once digested and metabolized by the body. When the body's pH is kept at a slightly alkaline level, all the systems and organs can work more efficiently in a more aerobic environment.
Understanding the Effects of the Body's pH Level
The pH level of the body has the ability to affect every single cell of the body. When the blood has an alkaline pH instead of an acidic pH, it will have a positive effect on how every bodily system functions. The brain, circulatory system, nerves, muscles, respiratory system, digestive system, and reproductive system can all benefit from a proper pH level. On the other hand, when the pH of the body is too acidic, it is susceptible to many diseases and problems. Choosing Foods for an Alkaline Diet
It's actually quite easy to eat a diet rich in alkaline-producing foods. Most fresh fruits and vegetables are excellent choices. Red meat is not a good choice, but you can add plenty of protein to your meals by using soy products, delicious beans, legumes, and nuts such as almonds. You should eliminate unhealthy fats from your diet, but you can use good fats such as olive, canola, and flax seed oil. High fat dairy products should be avoided, but you can drink soy milk and goat's milk. Cheeses made from soy milk and goat's milk would also be good choices. Replace the empty calories of soda with delicious iced herb tea, green tea and lemon water. Coffee should be avoided, but you can drink hot herbal or green tea. Replace pasta with healthy whole grains such as wild rice, millet and quinoa. When sweetening your foods, focus on natural products such as raw sugar, Stevia and maple sugar. As you can see, you'll have many nutritious choices that are both delicious and high in alkalizing properties.
